2023  Summer Read Choices!

Dear Families,

Science shows that reading over the summer is critical to maintaining a student’s current reading level.  It is recommended that 7 books be read over the summer just to maintain current reading level. It takes even more than 7 books to grow a student's reading level.   While we would LOVE for every student to read 7 or more books over the summer, we also want everyone to have FUN, RELAX, and RECHARGE during this short summer.

For this year’s summer read,  we have selected books that focus on the theme of community and kindness since these are some of the guiding principles of the IB World Schools.  Each TBS student is required to read at least ONE of the books selected for their grade level below.  In ADDITION to reading a book from their grade level, we encourage students to read other books or the suggested books for other grade levels .

Each of these books has been read by multiple teachers and has been selected for the grade level.  We encourage our 6th and 8th graders to read reviews of the book choices before they choose which book they will read.  Seventh grade teachers are asking all students to read the same book, so that we can begin to  build community based upon activities centered around a shared reading experience.  As CS Lewis said, “We read to know that we are not alone.”

We have included the Battle of the Books list for this year since they are high interest books, and we know that many  students will be  seeking more books to read over the summer.

Thanks for your support and participation!
